The Syntropic Mind: Contemporary Maps of Entheogenic Vision from Neural Entropy to Analytic Idealism
Abstract
Entheogenic plants and molecules can produce experiences of extraordinary organisation: recurrent geometry, articulated environments, apparently autonomous agents, autobiographical review, moral and affective sequences, and states interpreted as instruction or revelation. The informational richness of these phenomena presents a harder problem than altered intensity alone. Contemporary neuroscience can describe receptor action, oscillatory change, network desegregation, signal diversity and the relaxation of hierarchical prediction, yet none of these measures directly specifies why a particular history, entity, landscape or symbolic drama appears. This essay surveys current explanations as a gradient of descriptive languages. At one end are molecular pharmacology, default-mode network dynamics, entropy, predictive processing, criticality, self-organisation and plasticity. An intermediate region contains Michael Winkelman’s psychointegrator model, Dalibor Sames’s endocomputational technology, and Stanislav Grof’s clinically derived systems of condensed experience and Basic Perinatal Matrices. These frameworks address the passage from biological perturbation into patterned memory, emotion, narrative and transformation. A further region contains Hameroff and Penrose’s Orch OR, panpsychism, cosmopsychism and Bernardo Kastrup’s analytic idealism. Here the inquiry reaches beneath network neuroscience into the physical basis of conscious moments and outward into the ontological status of consciousness itself. DMT and ibogaine recur throughout as contrasting cases: one a rapid expansion of state-space accompanied by immersive world-generation, the other a prolonged oneirogenic process often organised around biography and evaluation. The present field offers a layered cartography in which empirical, phenomenological and metaphysical accounts illuminate different dimensions of one event. Its central task is to understand how changes in material constraint participate in the emergence of coherent conscious form.
Introduction: The Problem of Organised Visionary Experience
Much psychedelic neuroscience begins with perturbation. A molecule binds to receptors or transporters; oscillatory rhythms change; established networks lose integrity; previously segregated systems communicate; the accessible repertoire of brain states expands. These findings have transformed the study of altered consciousness. They also leave its most striking phenomenological feature incompletely addressed. The psychedelic field is rarely experienced as a statistical measure of variability. It may arrive as tessellated geometry, a chamber with discernible architecture, an encounter with a socially legible presence, a sequence of childhood scenes, a confrontation with death, or an extended appraisal of a life. Even experiences reported as ineffable possess temporal, spatial, affective and intentional organisation.
Naturalistic reports of inhaled N,N-dimethyltryptamine make the problem unusually visible. In a qualitative analysis of 3,778 accounts, recurrent features included fractals and patterned colour, entities, rooms, tunnels, alternate dimensions and interactions interpreted as pedagogical or guiding (Lawrence et al., 2022). A separate survey of 2,561 memorable DMT entity encounters recorded perceived communication, agency and enduring changes in metaphysical belief (Davis et al., 2020). Selection, expectation, retrospective reconstruction and online subculture shape both datasets. Their scale still identifies an explanatory target: the experience commonly contains structured scenes and social cognition, not undifferentiated sensory noise.
Ibogaine presents a different structure. Qualitative reports describe a long oneirogenic interval containing memories, ancestors or other presences, landscapes, frightening scenes, self-observation, catharsis and forms of life review (Kohek et al., 2020). The participant may retain the position of a witness while biographical material unfolds in ordered or thematic sequences. Recent studies of magnesium–ibogaine treatment also describe rapid changes attributed by participants to insight, emotional processing and shifts in self-relation, although the clinical samples are small, uncontrolled and embedded in intensive programmes of preparation and support (Cherian et al., 2024; Olash et al., 2026).
These examples sharpen the question. Why does pharmacological destabilisation yield organised, information-rich phenomena? “Information-rich” here refers to experiential differentiation and relation: many elements are present, yet they form scenes, sequences, agents, themes and meanings. High subjective information is compatible with inaccurate perception, confabulation, cultural mediation and dreamlike synthesis. Organisation gives no automatic warrant to the beliefs formed within the state. It still demands explanation.
The theories surveyed below form a gradient rather than a ladder of truth. Close to direct measurement are models that specify receptors, signals and networks. The middle range coordinates neural change with memory, affect, symbolism and therapeutic process. The outer range asks whether neuronal signalling exhausts the physical implementation of consciousness and whether matter can be understood independently of experience. Empirical proximity and explanatory depth are different virtues. A receptor model can be experimentally precise while remaining silent about why experience exists; an ontology can render consciousness intelligible while leaving drug-specific mechanisms unspecified. Each region addresses a different part of the same event.

The Neuroscientific Floor: Pharmacology Without a Single Psychedelic Mechanism
No unitary pharmacology covers every psychointegrator state. Classic psychedelics such as DMT, psilocybin and LSD are strongly associated with agonism at cortical serotonin 2A receptors, followed by changes in excitation, recurrent signalling and large-scale coordination. DMT also interacts with other serotonergic sites and regulates the sigma-1 receptor, an intracellular chaperone associated with endoplasmic-reticulum and mitochondrial signalling (Fontanilla et al., 2009). Oral ayahuasca adds β-carbolines that inhibit monoamine oxidase and contribute their own pharmacological profile. Bolus DMT, extended DMT infusion and ayahuasca differ in time course, bodily context and experiential architecture.
Ibogaine operates through a broader molecular matrix. It is metabolised to noribogaine and affects monoaminergic, opioid, glutamatergic, nicotinic and other systems. Hwu and colleagues (2026) describe coordinated modulation of vesicular monoamine transporter 2, serotonin transporter and organic cation transporter 2, among other actions. In their account, ibogaine’s effect arises from relative potencies across targets, compartments and phases rather than one privileged receptor. Sames calls this matrix pharmacology. The concept belongs to molecular science; his description of ibogaine as an “endocomputational therapeutic and psychospiritual technology” belongs to a broader phenomenological and theoretical register (Sames, 2026a; 2026b).
The contrast between DMT and ibogaine prevents “psychedelic” from becoming an explanation in itself. DMT can precipitate an overwhelming change within seconds and subside within minutes. Ibogaine and noribogaine create a prolonged sequence extending across many hours and into a long post-acute interval. DMT is especially informative about rapid cortical reorganisation. Ibogaine foregrounds distributed pharmacology, metabolism, autobiographical processing and temporal staging. Their phenomenologies may overlap in imagery, perceived agency and self-transcendence while arising through distinct initiating conditions.
Molecular accounts establish causal entry points. They identify how a compound changes the conditions under which consciousness unfolds. Detailed experiential content is not encoded in a DMT molecule or in an ibogaine transporter profile. The content emerges from interactions among drug action, nervous system, body, personal history, culture, setting and ongoing sensory input. The explanatory movement from receptor to world remains the central passage.
Entropy
The entropic-brain hypothesis proposed that psychedelic states exhibit greater entropy in spontaneous neural activity than ordinary waking consciousness, loosening the dynamics associated with entrenched cognition (Carhart-Harris et al., 2014). Entropy has since become a general vocabulary for psychedelic openness. Its scientific uses are narrower and measurement-dependent.

Maximum entropy occurs when the defined states are equiprobable. Psychedelic studies rarely estimate an exhaustive entropy of the whole brain. They calculate proxies within particular descriptions: Lempel–Ziv compressibility of an EEG sequence, diversity of connectivity motifs, entropy of connectome harmonics, variability of states or uncertainty in a model. An increase in one measure can coexist with stability or reduction in another. Spatial scale and temporal window matter.
DMT supplies some of the strongest acute evidence. Placebo-controlled EEG found reduced alpha and beta power alongside increased Lempel–Ziv signal diversity, with changes tracking plasma concentration and subjective intensity (Timmermann et al., 2019). Simultaneous EEG–fMRI later found reduced integrity within canonical networks, increased global connectivity, greater communication between networks and a flattening of large-scale cortical hierarchy (Timmermann et al., 2023). Connectome-harmonic analysis recorded a wider and more entropic repertoire whose time course followed experience intensity (Vohryzek et al., 2025). Network-control modelling found that less control energy was required for transitions between consecutive brain states; reductions were prominent in visual, frontoparietal and default-mode systems and related to 5-HT2A receptor distribution and EEG diversity (Singleton et al., 2025). Whole-brain modelling has also described a transient destabilisation near a bifurcation, with heightened susceptibility to perturbation in visual and frontoparietal regions (Piccinini et al., 2025).
These results suggest a more traversable state-space. Neural coalitions that ordinarily dominate may lose exclusivity, transitions become easier, and a broader repertoire becomes available. “Maximum entropy” obscures the pattern. A maximally random signal contains no stable rooms, faces, narratives or recurrent geometries. The psychedelic brain appears to combine increased diversity with generative organisation. Terms such as controlled entropy, metastable expansion and reduced transition barriers preserve that distinction.
Criticality offers a related model. A system near a critical point can balance local differentiation with long-range coordination, displaying sensitivity, wide dynamic range and flexible switching. Entropy, complexity, metastability and criticality measure different properties. Increased Lempel–Ziv diversity alone cannot establish scale-free critical dynamics (Papo, 2016). Psychedelic states may approach or pass through critical regimes, but such claims require scaling relations and data suited to their estimation.
Ibogaine complicates any simple equation between therapeutic action and sustained high entropy. Resting EEG recorded 3.5 days and one month after magnesium–ibogaine treatment showed increased theta–alpha power, decreased beta–gamma power, lower peak alpha frequency and reduced Lempel–Ziv complexity (Lissemore et al., 2025). Functional imaging in the same cohort found evolving changes in perfusion and connectivity rather than a global persistence of acute disorder (Sridhar et al., 2026). Acute peak-state measurements remain scarce. The available trajectory is compatible with a period of destabilisation followed by slower, selectively reorganised dynamics. The informative quantity may be an entropy arc: opening, exploration, selection and restabilisation.
Entropy theory explains the availability of alternatives. It does not select the alternative that becomes experienced. The transition from expanded repertoire to organised content leads toward predictive processing, network hierarchy and endogenous models of self and world.
Signal Diversity And An Expanded State Space

The Default Mode Network and the Relaxation of Hierarchical Control
The default mode network (DMN) includes medial prefrontal, posterior cingulate and precuneus, and lateral parietal regions engaged across autobiographical memory, self-referential judgement, temporal projection and internally directed cognition. Early psilocybin imaging reported decreased blood flow and coupling in prominent DMN nodes (Carhart-Harris et al., 2012). Later work places this finding within a broader loss of network segregation. Under DMT, within-network integrity declines while global and cross-network communication increase (Timmermann et al., 2023). A 2026 mega-analysis across psilocybin, LSD, DMT, ayahuasca and mescaline found a common tendency toward reduced coupling within established networks and increased coupling between transmodal association systems and sensory-motor systems, with variation by compound and small datasets for some substances (Girn et al., 2026).
This is better understood as a change in hierarchy than the disappearance of a neural “ego centre.” Networks supporting autobiographical selfhood remain present while their relationships with sensory, limbic and attentional systems change. Material normally constrained by established self-models can enter wider coordination. Internally generated imagery may acquire the force and organisation ordinarily assigned to perception.
REBUS—“relaxed beliefs under psychedelics”—places these changes within predictive processing (Carhart-Harris and Friston, 2019). Predictive models portray perception as active inference: hierarchical expectations meet sensory evidence, and the system continually estimates the causes of its signals. High-level priors organise durable beliefs about body, self, other people and world. Their influence depends on precision, the confidence assigned to a prediction or prediction error. Psychedelic 5-HT2A stimulation is proposed to reduce the precision of high-level priors, allowing signals and hypotheses normally suppressed by habitual models to influence experience.
This account connects perceptual novelty, ego dissolution and therapeutic revision. Depression, traumatic anticipation and addiction can be modelled as deep attractors: many cues return cognition and action to the same interpretations. Relaxed precision and lower transition barriers flatten portions of the landscape, exposing alternatives. DMT demonstrates an acute limit, as the ordinary body and environment may be displaced by an immersive generated world within seconds. Ibogaine presents a slower possibility, with memories and values sampled repeatedly across an extended interval.
Predictive processing also begins to address entity encounters. Human brains continually infer other minds from ambiguous sensory information, bodily cues and expectations. Altered sensory attenuation, weakened self–other boundaries and hyperactive social prediction could stabilise a felt presence as an apparently independent agent. Mago and colleagues (2026) combine REBUS, models of social agency and changes in self–other inference into a neurocomputational proposal for psychedelic entities. Such modelling can explain why agency becomes a powerful organising prior. The identity, speech, moral tone and cosmological status of a particular entity still draw on memory and culture as well as current neural dynamics.
The same limit applies to geometry and biography. Reduced high-level constraint can permit internally generated structure to dominate, yet a theory of loosened priors does not by itself predict a lattice, a maternal figure, a childhood kitchen or a scene of death and rebirth. It explains conditions of emergence more readily than the form that emerges.
Self-Organisation and the Passage from Instability to Form
Self-organisation describes macroscopic order arising through interactions among local components without a separate executive assigning each event. Brains, immune systems, developing organisms and ecological communities all show distributed coordination. In psychedelic states, the molecule can be treated as a change to coupling parameters and boundary conditions. The nervous system generates the subsequent imagery, affect and narrative through its own recursive dynamics.
Three processes are especially relevant. First, destabilisation reduces the exclusivity of established neural and psychological patterns. DMT studies directly record alpha suppression, network desegregation, increased diversity and lower transition energy. Second, exploration and selection allow sensory fragments, memories, emotions and social models to assemble into candidate forms. Reciprocal signalling, attractor dynamics and the brain’s generative architecture prevent this stage from becoming random recombination. Third, restabilisation reinforces some patterns while others disappear. Attention, affective salience, interpersonal response, ritual sequence and later rehearsal influence what becomes memory, belief or behavioural change.
This sequence helps distinguish informational richness from information transfer. A richly structured experience can arise through endogenous generation without a detailed message entering from outside the organism. The same experience can be interpreted by a participant as encounter, revelation, memory, simulation or some combination. Neuroscience can study the organisation of the event while its ontological interpretation remains open.
Plasticity gives restabilisation a cellular horizon. Psychedelics can promote neuritogenesis, spinogenesis and synaptogenesis in preclinical systems (Ly et al., 2018). Intracellular 5-HT2A receptors have been implicated in cortical plasticity (Vargas et al., 2023); other work identifies binding of LSD and psilocin to the BDNF receptor TrkB (Moliner et al., 2023), and psychedelics can reopen a social-reward learning critical period in animal models (Nardou et al., 2023). These findings describe windows of increased revisability rather than predetermined therapeutic content. Learning during and after the state can stabilise relief, insight, confusion or maladaptive belief according to conditions.
The functional unit extends beyond molecule and isolated brain. Preparation, music, darkness, posture, interpersonal trust, ritual timing, language and post-session interpretation constrain the self-organising process. Amazonian ayahuasca practice offers an especially clear example: β-carboline vine, DMT-bearing admixture, song, diagnosis, social relation and cosmology form a coordinated technology of attention and meaning. Laboratory protocols create other forms of constraint through music programmes, eyeshades, clinical suggestion and psychometric categories. Culture enters causal explanation as an organisation of priors, salience and available imagery, not as an ornament added after neurobiology.
Psychointegrators: From Neural Disinhibition to Systemic Integration
Michael Winkelman proposed psychointegrators as a term for vision-inducing plants whose effects involve coordination across sensation, emotion, memory, cognition and social meaning (Winkelman, 2001). “Hallucinogen” foregrounds perceptual error, “psychedelic” the manifestation of mind, and “entheogen” sacramental interpretation. Psychointegrator foregrounds a process: previously segregated information becomes available for new forms of relation.

Winkelman’s account places serotonergic disinhibition within a wider integration of limbic emotion and neocortical cognition, shaped in human societies by ritual, rhythm, social bonding and cosmological interpretation. Its value for the present problem lies in moving from more neural variety to cross-domain coordination. An ibogaine life review can bind episodic memory, bodily response, moral evaluation and imagined future into one sequence. An ayahuasca vision can bind patterned imagery, song, kinship, illness and plant-person relations. A DMT encounter can bind visual form, language-like communication, social agency and metaphysical affect within minutes. These events vary widely, yet each exhibits integration across ordinarily differentiated systems.
Psychointegration also accommodates tension. Integration need not be comfortable, veridical or permanent. A state may juxtapose incompatible memories, amplify terror, or generate an interpretation later revised. The term names a possible operation rather than a favourable outcome. Its empirical development would require measures of cross-domain coupling: relations among autobiographical specificity, affect, interoception, social cognition, neural integration and subsequent behaviour.
Plants and molecules enter this model as catalysts within an assemblage. Their pharmacology shapes the range and timing of possible states. Organised content arises in relation with bodily history, environmental signals, ceremonial form and inherited categories of interpretation. This allows common psychophysiological tendencies to coexist with marked cultural difference. The term also resists the isolation of “drug effect” from the larger human technology through which a state is prepared, navigated and incorporated. Its place in the middle of the gradient is conceptually important: psychointegration names the positive organisation that can accompany neural disintegration, linking measurable losses of segregation with experiential gains in relation, sequence and salience.
Endocomputational Technology: The Organism Processing Itself
Dalibor Sames’s phrase “endocomputational therapeutic and psychospiritual technology” emerged after two decades of laboratory work on iboga chemistry and his own prolonged encounter with ibogaine. During that experience he reported successive “chapters,” vivid molecular structures, simulations and a process that seemed to address his scientific work and personal condition. The claim deserves to be heard at its full scale. Ibogaine appeared to him as a molecular intervention that caused the living system to perform complex work upon itself.

The endo- distinguishes this proposal from computation performed by an external device upon an inert object. In a computer, hardware, programme and data can be conceptually separated. In an organism, the medium of computation is altered by the process it performs. Receptors change signalling; signalling changes attention and autonomic state; attention changes memory retrieval; retrieved memory changes affective valuation; valuation changes the path taken through subsequent imagery. The “output” becomes part of the next input. Molecular, cellular, neural, bodily, biographical and symbolic operations form a recursive circuit.
Sames’s matrix pharmacology provides the molecular analogue. Ibogaine and noribogaine act across several transport systems, compartments and timescales rather than commanding one receptor with the relative singularity associated with many classical drugs (Hwu et al., 2026). Sames has described this as subtle modulation throughout a biological matrix: many “fingers” adjusting a system whose global response exceeds any isolated target. Matrix pharmacology and endocomputation are distinct claims, but they share an architecture. Distributed molecular modulation can initiate distributed psychological and physiological reorganisation.
Four features clarify the idea. Endogenous implementation locates the work in the organism’s own molecular, neural, autonomic, mnemonic and affective capacities. Recursive self-modelling makes the organism’s history, condition and possible futures available as objects of its own processing. State-space reconfiguration changes which experiential and behavioural patterns are stable and which transitions can occur. Path-dependent restabilisation recognises that the order reached after the experience depends upon the sequence actually traversed. The compound perturbs, but the living system computes through the perturbation.
Ibogaine gives the concept unusual phenomenological force because its duration permits repeated cycles of scene, witness and evaluation. A remembered episode may be presented, emotionally reweighted, placed beside another episode and returned to from a changed perspective. The witness-like standpoint reported in qualitative work allows content and appraisal to coexist (Kohek et al., 2020). Life review, encounters with ancestors, prospective scenes and moral reckoning can be approached as modes of counterfactual simulation: the system renders its own models perceptible and tests alternatives against affective and bodily response.
Under this interpretation, the vivid vision has a possible functional role. Image and narrative become an interface through which operations inaccessible to discursive thought are made available to consciousness. The cinematic form of ibogaine may be part of the computation rather than a decorative side effect of pharmacology. A scene can condense distributed memory, bodily feeling and value into a manipulable whole. Its experiential reality gives the simulation motivational force; its witnessed quality permits revision without complete identification.
DMT suggests another endocomputational regime. A rapid reduction of hierarchical stability, increased global coupling and expanded signal diversity can replace the ordinary self–world model with a densely organised field. The computation is compressed and less overtly autobiographical: geometry, space, agency and semantic impression can be assembled at exceptional speed. If ibogaine resembles prolonged recursive debugging, DMT resembles an abrupt reconfiguration of the generative environment within which any model appears.
The consequences extend into therapeutics. A medicine understood only by target occupancy may miss the work performed by the state it occasions. Attempts to remove visionary experience from an analogue could preserve some neurochemical benefits while eliminating a mode of endogenous processing; in other cases, the biological repair may proceed without elaborate phenomenology. Endocomputation makes this an open empirical and philosophical distinction rather than presuming either outcome. It asks where therapeutic work occurs: in molecular restoration, conscious simulation, post-acute learning, or their patterned conjunction.
“Technology” also names the larger arrangement that steers the computation. Screening, dose, music, darkness, bodily support, ceremonial song, lineage, therapeutic relation and later interpretation become parameters of a recursive system. They influence what receives salience, what is tolerated, what is completed and what becomes durable. The technology is molecular and cultural at once.
Endocomputation occupies a true middle position in the gradient. It can be read within physicalism as the recursive self-modification of a biological system. Within process philosophy, it describes a living event whose organisation cannot be detached from its unfolding. Within idealism, it can describe a dissociated centre altering its own boundary and relation to a wider mental field. Its strength lies in naming a common architecture across these ontologies: a psychointegrator recruits a living intelligence into an intensive operation upon its own organisation.
Grofian Depth Models: COEX Systems and Perinatal Form
Stanislav Grof’s cartography grew from an empirical undertaking of exceptional scale and duration. Trained in psychiatry and psychoanalysis, he began LSD research in Prague in 1956, later continuing at Johns Hopkins and the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center. He reported personal involvement in about four thousand psychedelic sessions, many conducted as serial psycholytic treatments in which the same patient returned through successive medium-dose sessions (Grof, 1975; 1980; Miller, 2015). This longitudinal structure allowed patterns to appear across sessions, bodies and biographies rather than as isolated peak experiences.

Grof’s claim was methodological. Psychedelics made ordinarily latent processes available to direct clinical observation. He distinguished abstract and aesthetic phenomena, psychodynamic-biographical material, perinatal sequences and transpersonal experience. These domains were not imposed as a fixed staircase through which every patient passed. They emerged as recurrent organisations within a large body of sessions, with individual experiences moving across several levels at once.
His systems of condensed experience—COEX systems—were among the earliest attempts to describe the non-chronological architecture of psychedelic recall. A COEX is a constellation of memories from different periods joined by a shared emotional quality or bodily sensation. A humiliation in adulthood, an episode of childhood rejection, a constriction in the chest and a symbolic scene of imprisonment may arise as layers of one system. When activated, the constellation colours perception, self-image, behaviour and the material that subsequently appears.
COEX theory proposes an affective topology of memory. Chronological distance matters less than resonance of charge. The psychedelic sequence can move “vertically” through a theme, gathering episodes that ordinary autobiographical narration keeps apart. In contemporary dynamical language, a COEX resembles a deep attractor distributed across memory, interoception, affect and image. Grof’s clinical vocabulary adds something the mathematical metaphor often omits: the attractor is lived as a meaningful constellation with somatic pressure, dramatic form and a history.
The therapeutic implication is substantial. A symptom may be one local expression of a larger experiential system. Relief may follow neither intellectual explanation nor suppression of the symptom, but the activation, experiential completion and reorganisation of the whole constellation. This helps explain why a single visionary sequence can feel as if it has worked simultaneously upon childhood, present relationship and bodily state. It also brings Grof into close relation with endocomputation: the system retrieves material by affective equivalence, renders its organisation perceptible and changes the weight carried by its constituent layers.
Grof’s Basic Perinatal Matrices emerged from a second regularity. Patients repeatedly described clusters of imagery, emotion and physical sensation that they themselves associated with phases of biological birth. BPM I concerns intrauterine existence and can range from oceanic union to a disturbed or toxic womb. BPM II corresponds to contractions before the cervix opens: enclosure, engulfment, helplessness and “no exit.” BPM III corresponds to propulsion through the birth canal: crushing pressure, struggle, aggression, sexuality, fire, excremental imagery and titanic conflict. BPM IV concerns separation, release, light, death–rebirth and a radically altered relation to existence (Grof, 1975; 1985).
The importance of the matrices exceeds the proposition of literal episodic birth memory. Grof described a structural coupling among physiology, emotion, biography and myth. Suffocation in a session could recruit memories of later choking or oppression, images of crucifixion or underworld descent, and a bodily movement toward release. Biological process becomes an image-generating matrix; mythic form gives transpersonal scale to bodily crisis. The patient does not recall one event in the ordinary sense, but enters an organised field in which several layers express the same dynamic pattern.
Several readings remain possible. The matrices may preserve implicit perinatal organisation; they may recruit generic mammalian circuits of enclosure, threat, struggle and escape; they may be archetypal forms through which consciousness dramatises transformation; cultural narratives may shape their imagery; these processes may overlap. The clinical regularity survives disagreement over causal interpretation. Grof’s durable contribution is the observation that high-intensity states often organise themselves into sequences of ordeal and resolution whose coherence spans body, biography and myth.
The transpersonal domain carried the cartography beyond the individual life. Grof recorded identification with ancestors, animals, plants, embryological and evolutionary forms, historical scenes, archetypal figures, planetary consciousness and a universal mind. He did not encounter these only as abstract beliefs. They arrived as embodied episodes with the conviction and sensory force of lived reality. Their recurrence led him to question the adequacy of a psyche bounded by postnatal biography and the individual brain.
If even part of Grof’s cartography is accurate, psychedelic organisation reaches further than relaxed priors recombining personal memory. The organism may contain nested historical strata—developmental, perinatal, phylogenetic and cultural—that become experientially accessible under altered constraints. Myth may express bodily and evolutionary invariants rather than float free as acquired narrative. Healing may involve the completion of patterns distributed across levels that ordinary waking consciousness cannot hold together. Grof’s work then becomes a bridge from depth psychology into an ontology of a psyche whose boundaries remain unsettled.
Microtubules
Microtubules are dynamic polymers of tubulin central to neuronal structure, axonal transport, dendritic growth, organelle placement and synaptic remodelling. Any durable change in neurites and spines involves cytoskeletal construction. Psychedelic research has begun to touch this level. In human cerebral organoids, 5-MeO-DMT altered proteins associated with dendritic-spine formation, microtubule dynamics, cytoskeletal reorganisation and long-term potentiation (Dakic et al., 2017). Substituted phenethylamines have affected tubulin polymerisation in vitro (De Abreu et al., 2023). These findings support a role for cytoskeletal biology in cellular response and plasticity.
Orchestrated objective reduction—Orch OR—arose from the convergence of two independent lines of reasoning. Roger Penrose argued from mathematical understanding, Gödelian incompleteness and the quantum measurement problem that conscious insight may involve physical processes that cannot be reduced to algorithmic computation. He proposed objective reduction (OR): quantum superpositions become unstable when the gravitational self-energy separating their alternative spacetime geometries reaches a threshold. Collapse is a real physical event rather than an observer-dependent update, and Penrose proposed that the selection involved contains a non-computable element.
Stuart Hameroff approached consciousness from cell biology and anaesthesiology. He regarded the neuron as too internally complex to be treated as a single switching unit and proposed microtubules as a sub-neuronal information-processing architecture. Tubulin lattices could, in his account, support coherent oscillations and quantum states, while microtubule-associated proteins, synaptic inputs and cellular activity “orchestrate” their evolution. The meeting of these proposals gave Penrose a candidate biological substrate and Hameroff a physical account of how sub-neuronal organisation might become conscious experience.

Orch OR describes a nested process. Quantum possibilities evolve within microtubules; biological organisation tunes their development; objective reduction produces discrete moments of awareness or choice; the selected microtubular state influences membrane and synaptic activity; large-scale neural processes feed back into later orchestration. Consciousness occurs neither at an isolated synapse nor in an abstract quantum realm. It arises where quantum process, cytoskeletal organisation and neuronal dynamics meet.
The theory is ambitious because it attempts to join three problems usually treated separately: the quantum measurement problem, the non-computable aspect Penrose attributes to understanding, and the production of phenomenal experience. Its history includes detailed replies to objections concerning decoherence, biological temperature, microtubular coherence and timescale. Debate over these points remains active. The stature of the proposal lies in the architecture of the synthesis and the willingness to place consciousness inside fundamental physics, not in an exemption from experimental revision.
Its reasoning is abductive in the strict sense: Penrose and Hameroff infer a hidden architecture capable of making several anomalies intelligible together. Penrose begins from forms of mathematical apprehension that appear to outrun formal procedure and from the unresolved transition between quantum possibility and definite actuality (Penrose, 1989; 1994). Hameroff begins from anaesthesia’s selective abolition of consciousness, the behavioural sophistication of single cells, and the immense ordered complexity inside each neuron. Microtubular quantum computation is proposed as the best unifying explanation of that conjunction. Any individual premise can be contested, but the argument has a cumulative structure that disappears when Orch OR is reduced to the phrase “quantum effects in the brain.”
If Orch OR contributes even part of the picture, several consequences follow. The neuron ceases to be the lowest meaningful unit of conscious computation. Cytoskeletal organisation becomes an active informational stratum capable of influencing firing from below. Brain rhythms may express interference or beat frequencies propagated upward from faster microtubular dynamics. General anaesthesia may abolish consciousness through actions on a delicate sub-neuronal organisation while leaving much ordinary neural signalling intact. The relation between chemistry and consciousness would extend beyond receptor binding into the physical conditions under which coherent biological states form and reduce.
Penrose’s non-computability carries another consequence. Conscious choice and understanding would not be exhaustively reproducible by a classical algorithm, however elaborate its simulation of neural networks. Nature would contain genuine selections that cannot be derived by computation from prior states. The implications reach artificial intelligence, agency and the status of mathematical insight: functional imitation and conscious instantiation could come apart unless an artificial system reproduced the relevant physical process.
The ontological consequence is deeper. Objective reduction is tied to spacetime geometry, so conscious moments would express a feature of the universe’s basic structure rather than appear late as an accidental product of neural complexity. Orch OR is neither straightforward panpsychism nor idealism, but it places proto-conscious qualities or precursors near the foundations of physics. Evolution would have organised those intrinsic possibilities into the sustained, richly differentiated stream of animal consciousness.
Psychedelic states acquire a different horizon under this hypothesis. Receptor pharmacology and network desegregation would remain valid descriptions at their own scales, while compounds might also alter cytoskeletal oscillation, coherence, orchestration or the coupling between sub-neuronal and network dynamics. The exceptional density, simultaneity and compositional unity of DMT experience could reflect a change in how conscious moments are selected and bound, not only an increase in cortical repertoire. Ibogaine’s long, internally staged process could involve a prolonged retuning across molecular, cytoskeletal and network layers. These possibilities have not yet been demonstrated, but they state the real consequence of the proposal: psychedelics may perturb the physical formation of conscious moments rather than only their representational contents.
The existing cellular findings acquire significance here without serving as confirmation. Psychedelic-related changes in microtubule dynamics and tubulin polymerisation establish biochemical access to the proposed substrate. A future bridge would need to show how a psychedelic changes microtubular physical states, how those changes couple to recorded neural dynamics, and how the resulting pattern corresponds to altered experience. Recent proposals involving calcium-phosphate Posner nanophases and nuclear-spin dynamics extend the same search for a falsifiable interface between psychedelic signalling and quantum process (Geraci et al., 2026).
Orch OR expands the gradient downward and outward at once: downward from networks into the cytoskeleton and quantum–classical boundary, outward from the brain into spacetime geometry. Its significance for psychointegrators lies in refusing to assume that the present scale of measurement is the final scale of explanation.

From Panpsychism to Analytic Idealism
At the outer region of the gradient, the question changes from how does the brain reorganise experience? to what kind of reality permits experience at all? Physicalism usually treats consciousness as dependent upon, realised by or identical with physical processes. Panpsychism reverses one premise by attributing experiential or proto-experiential character to the fundamental constituents of nature. Its central difficulty is combination: how innumerable micro-subjects could form the unified subject of a human mind. Cosmopsychism begins instead with a conscious cosmos and derives local subjects from it, encountering a corresponding decomposition or individuation problem (Shani, 2015; Goff, 2017).
Bernardo Kastrup’s analytic idealism proposes a more radical economy. Phenomenal consciousness is the sole ontological primitive; matter is the extrinsic appearance of mental processes rather than a second substance from which experience must emerge. The world is mental, but it is not the private imagination of a human observer.

Universal Consciousness and Its Alters
Kastrup uses pathological dissociation as an empirical analogy for individuation. In dissociative identity disorder, one psyche can produce relatively autonomous centres of subjectivity with distinct memories, dispositions and perspectives. Dissociation divides access without dividing the underlying ontological field. Kastrup scales this principle cosmically: living organisms are bounded centres—or alters—within universal consciousness.
An alter is real as a perspective. Its experiences are private, its agency is locally organised and it cannot ordinarily inspect the mental life outside its boundary. Its separation is functional rather than absolute. The relation resembles a whirlpool in a river: dynamically identifiable, causally effective and spatially bounded, yet composed of the same medium and never detached from the larger flow.
This model avoids the panpsychist combination problem because individual consciousnesses are not assembled from tiny subjects. It addresses the cosmopsychist decomposition problem through dissociation: nature already demonstrates that one field of consciousness can contain mutually inaccessible centres. The clinical phenomenon functions as an existence proof for the general form of partition, while the extension from human dissociation to cosmic individuation remains metaphysical inference.
Body, Brain and the Extrinsic Appearance of Mind
Under analytic idealism, a living body is what a dissociated mental process looks like when observed across its boundary. Metabolism is the extrinsic appearance of dissociation; neural activity is the extrinsic appearance of the alter’s inner experience and cognitive organisation. Correlations between brain and mind remain expected. Injury, stimulation, anaesthesia and psychoactive drugs alter experience because the observed physiological event and the lived mental event are two perspectives upon one process, not because an independently existing material substance manufactures consciousness.
The inanimate world is likewise the appearance of transpersonal mental activity surrounding the alter. Its lawfulness and resistance to personal desire follow from its location outside the ego’s dissociated field. Analytic idealism is neither solipsism nor the claim that an individual creates reality by thought. Mountain, storm, other organism and psychoactive plant express processes in universal consciousness that confront the personal alter from beyond its volitional control.
Perception becomes boundary interaction. The alter receives the surrounding activity through the sensory interface and represents it in the perceptual forms available to its species. Ordinary experience already involves transpersonal mental process crossing into a dissociated centre in encoded form. The familiar material world is the stable image produced by that relation.
Psychedelics as Changes in Dissociative Permeability
Psychedelic action can then be interpreted as a change in the integrity, permeability or organisation of the dissociative boundary. Reduced integrity within networks associated with autobiographical selfhood, altered hierarchical control and increased cross-network communication are the extrinsic appearance of this change. Ego dissolution describes the corresponding interior event: the narrative and bodily centre through which experience is ordinarily partitioned loses some of its exclusivity.
Reassociation need not imply complete merger with universal consciousness. Dissociation can soften by degrees. Personal memories normally segregated from one another may communicate, fitting Grof’s COEX phenomena and Sames’s recursive life review. Bodily and environmental boundaries may become porous. Archetypal or apparently autonomous contents may enter the experiential field without being recognised as products of the autobiographical ego. At greater intensity, the distinction between subject and world may collapse into unity or an impersonal field of awareness.
This changes the interpretation of psychedelic content. A physicalist account usually treats visionary worlds and entities as internally generated models whose sensory authority has increased under altered precision. Analytic idealism allows a larger set of possibilities. The content may still arise from the personal alter: dissociation within dissociation, dreamlike construction, memory and cultural expectation remain available. It may also express mental activity beyond the ordinary ego boundary—another alter, a transpersonal process, or a formation within universal consciousness that has no physical analogue at the scale of ordinary objects. The ontology does not decide the identity of each encounter in advance; it removes the skull as an absolute ontological perimeter.
DMT is especially provocative in this frame. The abrupt replacement of the everyday world by a coherent domain can be read as a radical change in the representational interface through which a dissociated centre encounters mental activity. The compelling autonomy of entities becomes intelligible as contact with agency not authored by the personal narrative, whether that agency belongs to a deeper intrapsychic complex or a genuinely transpersonal process. Ayahuasca’s relational worlds and ibogaine’s ancestors, life review and guiding presences can be placed along the same continuum of altered boundary and reassociation.
Consequences of the Idealist Interpretation
If Kastrup’s ontology is broadly correct, psychointegrator molecules do not create consciousness or manufacture an unreal theatre inside a material brain. They alter the local organisation through which universal consciousness is partitioned, represented and made available to a particular centre. Neural entropy and network desegregation remain genuine discoveries, but they describe the visible dynamics of a loosening boundary rather than the production of experience from non-experiential matter.
The consequences extend to death and identity. Biological death would mark the dissolution of the process maintaining the alter’s boundary, while consciousness as the underlying medium persists. This leaves open how much autobiographical identity survives, because the person as a bounded pattern may depend upon the dissociation that is ending. Psychedelic ego dissolution can be interpreted as a partial and reversible anticipation of de-dissociation: continuity of awareness amid the weakening of the personal form that usually contains it.
Plants also acquire a changed status. A living plant is another dissociated centre within the same field, not inert matter carrying chemicals into the only conscious organism in the exchange. This does not establish any particular Indigenous account of plant personhood, but it creates ontological room for intersubjective relations that physicalism tends to translate into projection. The sacramental encounter can be understood as a relation among living centres mediated by chemistry, ecology, ritual and consciousness.
Analytic idealism and Orch OR approach fundamental consciousness from different directions. Orch OR retains a physical account in which objective reductions related to spacetime geometry constitute conscious moments. Analytic idealism treats spacetime and microtubules as appearances within consciousness. Both refuse the idea that network-level computation alone closes the explanatory gap. Their disagreement concerns whether fundamental physics generates, instantiates or already appears within experience.
The value of Kastrup’s model for this essay lies in the coherence of the whole reversal. Brain data are not dismissed, and visionary phenomenology is not confined in advance to an intracranial simulation. Molecule, brain, world and experience become different presentations of processes within one reality. Psychedelic reassociation then names a possible ontological event: a locally bounded centre becoming permeable to a mental field larger than its ordinary identity.
DMT and Ibogaine Across the Gradient
The gradient becomes clearest when the same two compounds are followed through every level.
At the molecular level, DMT foregrounds 5-HT2A-linked serotonergic perturbation with rapid kinetics; ibogaine foregrounds metabolism and distributed transporter and receptor action. At the network level, DMT shows acute alpha suppression, reduced network integrity, increased global coupling, increased signal diversity and easier state transitions. Comparable peak-state ibogaine data are sparse, while post-acute work suggests slower oscillations, reduced resting complexity and evolving perfusion and connectivity.
At the predictive and self-organising level, DMT resembles rapid replacement of the dominant world-model. The new field is often spatially immersive, socially populated and perceptually authoritative. Ibogaine resembles prolonged recursive evaluation, with a witnessing position maintained through memories, scenes and value-laden appraisal. The distinction is a matter of tendency; dose, route, context and person alter both profiles.
At the psychointegrative level, both compounds connect domains ordinarily kept apart. DMT can join geometry, affect, agency, language-like exchange and metaphysical conviction. Ibogaine can join episodic memory, bodily sensation, attachment, regret and future policy. Endocomputation describes the endogenous, path-dependent process by which such connections are generated and consolidated. Grofian models identify affective and narrative attractors—COEX clusters, constriction, struggle, death and emergence—that may organise portions of the material.
At the quantum and ontological level, both compounds place pressure on the scale at which explanation is assumed to end. Orch OR raises the possibility that the extraordinary organisation of a state involves altered selection and integration at the sub-neuronal quantum–classical boundary. Analytic idealism reads the same transformation as a change in the partition through which a dissociated centre encounters a larger mental reality. Small molecular changes can coincide with whole worlds of experience; the scale disproportion is part of the phenomenon, not an inconvenience outside it.
The contrast suggests that therapeutic and existential significance may depend on the shape of the complete trajectory more than on peak entropy or intensity. DMT creates a steep and brief opening; ibogaine sustains a long interval of simulation and evaluation. Subsequent learning depends on what is selected, socially interpreted and stabilised. A theory of the organised psychedelic mind must model this arc across time.
Emergence Across Layers of Reality
The gradient can now be understood as a movement among scales of emergence rather than from fact into fantasy. A molecule, a microtubule, a neuronal population, a self-model, a visionary figure and a cosmology are not interchangeable descriptions. Each belongs to an organisation with its own relations, regularities and causal powers. Higher-order form depends upon lower-order process while possessing properties absent from an inventory of its components.
Water offers the familiar analogy. Molecular description is indispensable to understanding hydrogen bonding, yet wetness appears only at a collective scale. A score can be analysed as acoustic frequency, muscular gesture, harmonic relation, emotional movement and cultural work. None of these accounts cancels the others. Psychedelic consciousness intensifies the same epistemic problem because the layers transform together and become available to introspection within one event.
At the pharmacological layer, receptor affinity, transporter modulation, metabolism and intracellular signalling explain the initiating perturbation. At the dynamical layer, entropy, criticality, network control and predictive hierarchy explain how the repertoire of brain states changes. At the organismic layer, psychointegration and endocomputation describe a living system recursively processing memory, affect, body and possible action. At the depth-phenomenological layer, Grofian COEX systems and perinatal matrices describe the forms through which this material constellates and moves. At the sub-neuronal and physical layer, Orch OR asks whether conscious selection reaches into quantum-coherent cytoskeletal processes and spacetime geometry. At the ontological layer, panpsychism and analytic idealism ask whether experience emerges from matter, inhabits fundamental physics or constitutes the reality of which matter is an appearance.
Reduction remains essential. Without it, one cannot distinguish DMT from 5-MeO-DMT, receptor agonism from transporter modulation, acute signal diversity from post-acute slowing, or an effective therapy from a dangerous intervention. Ibogaine’s hERG inhibition and associated cardiac risk are not altered by the metaphysical depth of its visions (Koenig et al., 2014; Oña et al., 2022). Material analysis supplies precision, causal leverage and the capacity to develop safer therapeutics.
Explanatory reduction becomes restrictive when the substrate is treated as the completed meaning of the phenomenon. A neural correlate of an ancestor encounter identifies a material relation; it does not exhaust what an ancestor is within a Bwiti lineage, a personal history or a lived metaphysics. A decrease in DMN integrity can accompany ego dissolution without containing the first-person fact of boundarylessness. A β-carboline and DMT synergy can be chemically specified while the ayahuasca event remains inseparable from song, plant relation, diagnosis and the world disclosed in ceremony.
Phenomenology addresses the ontology as lived. In the state, entities appear autonomous, memories reveal hidden organisation, geometric form carries intelligence, and death–rebirth can be encountered as an event rather than entertained as a concept. These qualities shape behaviour, art, religion and therapeutic change because they are lived with ontological weight. Describing them as experiences preserves neither belief nor disbelief; it recognises that human worlds are formed through what consciousness undergoes and takes to be real.
The descriptive languages also act back upon one another. Grof’s clinical motifs can direct neuroscientific attention toward patterned sequence rather than global intensity. Endocomputation can reframe pharmacology around distributed trajectories rather than single targets. Orch OR can direct measurement toward intracellular organisation and anaesthetic or psychedelic modulation below the synapse. Analytic idealism can expose metaphysical assumptions concealed inside causal language. Neuroscience, in turn, constrains every wider theory by showing the fine-grained dependence of experience upon material state.
Emergence across layers offers neither a compromise nor a forced synthesis. Orch OR and analytic idealism disagree about whether spacetime is foundational or appears within consciousness. Grof’s transpersonal interpretation exceeds what REBUS requires. Endocomputation can operate inside several ontologies. Their coexistence becomes productive when each is allowed to articulate the dimension it was developed to perceive.
Conclusion: From Substrate to Lived Ontology
The organised psychedelic mind is one event appearing through several orders of description. Chemistry shows how a plant or molecule enters the body and alters a matrix of targets. Neuroscience shows networks losing established segregation, state transitions becoming easier and the ordinary hierarchy of self and world becoming less dominant. These accounts provide the indispensable material grammar of the transformation.
The experiential sentence exceeds that grammar. DMT can precipitate an inhabited world in the interval between injection and metabolic clearance. Ibogaine can organise a life into witnessed chapters extending across memory, relation and imagined future. Ayahuasca can join vine, admixture, song, body, lineage, animal, ancestor and geometric intelligence within a single field of participation. This content constitutes the form in which the state exists for the person undergoing it.
Winkelman’s psychointegration names the coordination of ordinarily separated domains. Sames’s endocomputation names the recursive labour through which a living system models and reorganises itself. Grof’s cartography names deep experiential structures that recur across biography, body and myth. Hameroff and Penrose ask whether the conscious moment reaches into organised quantum process and the geometry of spacetime. Kastrup asks whether brain, body and world are already appearances within a universal field of experience whose local centres can dissociate and partially reassociate.
These languages form a nested account of emergence. Molecules modulate cells; cells participate in oscillations and networks; networks sustain bodies and self-models; selves inhabit histories and cultures; altered selves enter symbolic and transpersonal worlds; those worlds provoke questions about the nature of the reality in which every layer occurs. Causation runs through the layers, while intelligibility changes with scale.
Knowledge of substrate gives medicine its power to measure, compare and intervene. Knowledge of lived form gives therapy access to meaning, relation and transformation. Metaphysical inquiry asks what kind of reality can contain both the measurable transition and the world that appears through it. Psychointegrator states bring these requirements together with unusual force because their material causes are identifiable while their conscious products can exceed the ontology within which those causes are usually described.
The unresolved question concerns the status of the organisation itself. Recurrent geometry, autonomous agency, affective constellations and death–rebirth sequences may be generated by a brain exploring an expanded repertoire; they may express embodied and evolutionary structures deeper than individual memory; they may involve sub-neuronal physical selection; they may mark altered permeability within a wider field of consciousness. Each account identifies a different possible source of form.
An adequate understanding will preserve the passage among these levels. Reduction to substrate develops knowledge of brain, pharmacology and therapeutics. Phenomenology reveals how the event is given. Depth models show how it gathers a life into patterned experience. Ontology asks what the experience, organism and world ultimately are. The psychointegrator becomes legible across the whole gradient: molecule, biological perturbation, endocomputational process, visionary form, lived encounter and opening onto the nature of consciousness.
