Solarisation (Rayograph)
Methods for achieving in Photoshop
Technique 1
- Load image
- Go to Filter>Stylise>Solarize
This approach is the most basic and leaves the least range of experimentation.
Technique 2
- Load image
- Dupicate base layer image and name ‘exclude’
- Invert ‘exclude’ layer
- Set layer visibility to ‘exclusion‘
- Select ‘All’ and ‘copy merge‘
- Paste new layer and name ‘luminosity’ and set layer visibility to ‘luminosity‘
- Hide layer ‘exclude’
- Play with opacity, hue, saturation & levels

If you want a more psychedelic effect, instead of ‘luminosity’, choose ‘lighten‘, ‘linear light‘ or ‘vivid light‘ on the layer visibility option.

Technique 3
Use Image>Adjustments>Curves

Preparing for Painting
For Mischtechnik study, print out in b&w and if you have a color printer, or for interests sake, you may wish to flatten the layers of a copy of the image, and go to image>adjustments>hue/saturation, select colorise and move it to your intended imprimatura color and desired intensity and value/contrast.
