Methods for achieving in Photoshop

Technique 1

Load image
Go to Filter>Stylise>Solarize

This approach is the most basic and leaves the least range of experimentation.

Technique 2

Load image
Dupicate base layer image and name ‘exclude’
Invert ‘exclude’ layer
Set layer visibility to ‘exclusion‘
Select ‘All’ and ‘copy merge‘
Paste new layer and name ‘luminosity’ and set layer visibility to ‘luminosity‘
Hide layer ‘exclude’
Play with opacity, hue, saturation & levels

If you want a more psychedelic effect, instead of ‘luminosity’, choose ‘lighten‘, ‘linear light‘ or ‘vivid light‘ on the layer visibility option.

Technique 3

Use Image>Adjustments>Curves

Preparing for Painting

For Mischtechnik study, print out in b&w and if you have a color printer, or for interests sake, you may wish to flatten the layers of a copy of the image, and go to image>adjustments>hue/saturation, select colorise and move it to your intended imprimatura color and desired intensity and value/contrast.
