Ernst Fuchs ‘Spring Awakening’

Contributed by admin on March 9, 2022

As the founder of the ‘Vienna School of Fantastic Realism’, Ernst Fuchs is one of the most important Austrian artists of the 20th century.

While the early work of the artist, who was born in Vienna in 1930, was marked by terrible impressions of the Second World War and the Nazi regime, Ernst Fuchs devotes his main work to religious and mythological themes.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Ernst Fuchs developed into an all-round artist and achieved world fame with his oil paintings and etchings designed in the manner of the old masters.

When he bought the ‘Otto Wagner Villa’ in Wien Hütteldorf in 1972, renovated it and saved it from decay, he was also able to implement his interior design ideas, designing furniture, wallpaper, fabrics and carpets, together with his young muse and manager Cornelia.

From 1978 he travels to America, Africa, Asia and especially Israel.

Now a new creative cycle ‘Planeta Caelestis’ begins. Moods of nature, symbolic landscapes and fantasies of flowers emerge in free studies of nature, pastels and mixed media pictures.

The sculptures, still mostly determined by eroticism, are becoming more dynamic. Flowing hair combs and delicate wreaths of flowers adorn finely chiselled bronze sculptures. The exhibition ‘Spring Awakening’ primarily shows works from this creative period, but these include valuable early drawings and watercolors.

In addition to legendary etchings and original lithographs such as ‘David and Bathsheba’ from 1982 ‘Flora Awakened’ from 1978, there are also a few rare pieces for Fuchs connoisseurs and collectors from the once private collection.

The exhibition “Spring Awakening” will open on March 10, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. in the 4614 Gallery of the City of Marchtrenk, Linzerstraße 35. Opening hours are from March 11th to April 8th daily Monday to Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
